Humerus fracture

The humerus is the long bone in your upper arm that runs from your shoulder to your elbow. A fracture (break) in this bone can happen from a fall, a sports injury, or a direct blow. How it’s treated depends on where the break is, how severe it is, and whether the patient is an adult or a child.

In adults, many humerus fractures—especially in the middle of the bone—can be treated without surgery. The arm is usually placed in a special brace or sling to keep it still while it heals. This may be worn for 6–8 weeks. Pain and swelling are treated with rest, and pain medicine. Gentle movement exercises for the shoulder, elbow, and wrist are often started early to prevent stiffness.

Surgery is needed if the bone is broken into several pieces, is badly out of place, or if nerves and blood vessels are affected. Surgery is also needed when the broken bone has pierced the skin or has not healed with non-surgical treatment. In surgery, the bone can be fixed with plates and screws, or with a rod placed inside the bone. After surgery, physical therapy helps restore movement and strength. Adults usually take a few months to fully heal.

In children, humerus fractures are often treated without surgery because their bones heal faster and can remodel (straighten out) as they grow. A sling, splint, or cast is usually enough. Healing can take 4–6 weeks, and most kids regain full function quickly. Surgery in children is only needed if the bone is very out of place or if the break is near the growth plate (the area of bone responsible for lengthening). If surgery is done, small pins or plates are used and may be removed later.

Complications are rare but can include stiffness, weakness, or—in adults—slower healing, especially if the patient smokes or has certain medical conditions. Nerve injury can cause numbness or weakness, but this often improves over time.

With proper care, most humerus fractures heal well, and both adults and children can return to their normal activities. The key is to follow medical advice, keep up with physical therapy, and avoid activities that could cause another fall or injury until the bone is strong again.
