Osgood Schlatter Disease

What is Osgood Schlatter Disease?

Osgood Schlatter disease is a common cause of knee pain in growing children and teenagers, especially those who play sports. As kids grow, their bones have special areas called growth plates, made of softer cartilage that later hardens into bone. One important growth plate is at the top of the shin bone (tibia), just under the kneecap tendon (patellar tendon). When this area becomes irritated and inflamed, it can lead to Osgood Schlatter disease.

Why Does It Happen?

The patellar tendon helps the leg straighten, making it essential for running, jumping, and kicking. In active children who are still growing, repeated stress from sports or exercise can pull on the growth plate beneath the shinbone bump (tibial tubercle). This extra strain may cause pain and swelling, leading to the condition.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain just below the kneecap, especially during activity.
  • A tender bump on the upper shinbone that may look or feel enlarged.
  • Increased discomfort when running, jumping, or climbing stairs.
  • Tightness in the thigh (quadriceps) or hamstring muscles.
  • Symptoms may affect one or both knees.

Treatment Options

The good news is that Osgood Schlatter disease usually improves with time as the child finishes growing. Treatment focuses on easing pain and protecting the knee:

  • Rest and activity modification—limiting painful activities when needed.
  • Ice packs to reduce swelling after exercise.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises for the thigh and hamstring muscles.
  • Over-the-counter pain relief (as advised by a healthcare provider).
  • Supportive knee straps or pads in some cases.

Most young athletes recover fully with these conservative measures. Rarely, if pain continues into adulthood, surgery may be needed to correct lingering problems.
