Dr Ashley Arakkal is an orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialist fellowship training in complex hip and knee surgery. Dr Arakkal earned his medical degree from the University of Pretoria and completed his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.

During his community service in Mpumalanga, Dr Arakkal developed a deep passion for treating orthopaedic conditions. This passion led him to return to Cape Town, where he embarked on specialist training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Cape Town Hospital Complex, an institution internationally renowned for its orthopaedic programme. He successfully completed his specialist training, earning his FCORTH(SA) and Master of Medicine qualifications in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr Arakkal further refined his expertise in complex hip and knee surgery through subspecialist fellowship training at the University of Cape Town, focusing particularly on hip and knee replacements and knee cartilage and ligament surgery. His pursuit of excellence in his field let him to be selected for further subspeciality fellowship training in knee surgery at Fortius Clinic in London, one of the world’s leading orthopaedic hospitals and a FIFA-accredited centre of excellence. Here, Dr Arakkal gained advanced experience in the latest techniques in robotic knee replacement surgery and the treatment of elite athletes, including professional footballers and Olympic competitors from some of the leading orthopaedic surgeons in Europe, namely David Houlihan-Burne, Samuel Church, Jonathan Lavelle, Jonathan Webb and Andy Williams.

In addition to his clinical training, Dr Arakkal has contributed to the field of orthopaedic surgery through research published in international journals and as an author of a textbook chapter on the subject. He is a proud member of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, and the South African Orthopaedic Association.

After honing his skills abroad, Dr Arakkal returned to South Africa with the aim of establishing an orthopaedic practice that provides patients with world-class treatment. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid mountain biker.
