The ankle is a complex joint formed by the tibia, fibula, and talus. Ankle fractures are common and often caused by twisting injuries, falls, or sports accidents. They can range from small cracks to severe breaks involving multiple bones and ligaments.
In adults, minor, stable fractures can be treated with a walking boot or cast for about 6 weeks. If the bones are displaced or unstable, surgery is required. This usually involves plates and screws to hold the bones in place while they heal. If the skin over the ankle is very swollen or has blisters surgery is delayed until the blisters and swelling have resolved. This is to reduce the risk of infection after surgery. Recovery involves protecting the ankle from weight-bearing at first, then gradually increasing activity. Physiotherapy can help to restore movement and balance. Healing generally takes 8–12 weeks, with full recovery often taking longer.

In children, many ankle fractures heal with casting alone. Surgery is less common but may be needed if the break involves the growth plate or the bones cannot be aligned in a cast. Kids typically heal in 4–6 weeks and recover movement quickly.
Possible complications include stiffness, swelling, long term pain and—in adults—early arthritis if the fracture involves the joint surface. In children if the fracture involves a growth plate there is a risk of developing deformity in the future. Returning to sports should only happen once the doctor confirms full healing.
