The foot contains many small bones, and fractures can happen from dropping something heavy on the foot, twisting injuries, or stubbing a toe.
In adults, small fractures in the toes or foot bones that are stable can be treated with a stiff-soled shoe or walking boot, allowing weight-bearing as tolerated. More serious fractures—especially those involving the midfoot or heel—may require surgery to realign and stabilize the bones.

Healing can take 4–8 weeks for simple fractures and longer for more complex ones. In children, most foot and toe fractures heal quickly with minimal treatment, often just protective footwear or a short period in a cast. Surgery is rare, but if the growth plate is involved, careful monitoring is needed.
Complications are uncommon but can include stiffness, long-term pain, or changes in foot shape. Wearing proper footwear, avoiding risky barefoot activities, and allowing full healing before returning to sports can help prevent re-injury.
